Dear Supporters,

Here are a few new topics to update you on the Glacier/Howser project.

DVD Released

Just released is the DVD, “The Ruin of Glacier and Howser Creeks,” describing the proposed Glacier/Howser hydroelectric project while exposing the potential impacts to the people and wilderness of the area. The show is a call to action for people to defend their natural heritage and public assets.

Check it out at www.purcellallwild.org

Export Power

Where would all the electricity from the proposed Glacier/Howser hydro project go? We know that it is planned to be exported out of the Duncan valley to the Invermere substation in the East Kootenay . But we now expect the electricity to be exported much further afield than this. The substation is just down the road from the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort --a big potential user of energy. But if the resort doesn’t get built or there is too much electricity in the summer for the resort alone where would it go? A recent report from Pacific Gas & Electric in California indicates the likelihood of the electricity being exported to California . Attached is a letter to the editor published in the Valley Voice which explains the situation.

Final Application Rejected

Public meetings to express our opinions on the project were expected this summer. However, the proponent’s final application needs to be accepted by the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) for the process to continue and for the meetings to commence. Axor’s final application was rejected by the EAO. The disturbing thing is the fact that the proponent only needed to follow the terms of reference that they themselves had written in this very biased process. They could not fulfill this basic requirement.

While there is no indication as to just when the final application will be resubmitted, public meetings could still be held this fall. These meetings are very important to attend. They present opportunities for large numbers of people to express together their concerns with the proposed project. In the end, approval or disapproval of the project is made by the BC cabinet. They need to hear us loud and clear!
